I put that in the template so that I could quickly find all projects by searching for that, or even search for "open" projects. I never really used it, however, since it was easier to just browse the list in the @PROJECTS tab. ...and any project was consider "open" until it was dragged to the @DONE section, so I didn't end up using the checkbox.
